Calculating the Light Pole Banner Size

Height x Width = Number of Square Feet. For example, if you have a banner that is 5ft. x 5ft.- 5 x 5 = 25 square feet

Light Pole Banner Substrates

There are a few choices for the types of banners that can be used for pole banners. The main categories are fabric and vinyl.

Fabric banners can be made from screen-printed fabrics or dye sublimation printed polyester fabrics. Our bias is toward dye sublimation printed polyester fabric banners as they are affordable and last a long time. They can be done both single and double sided, with a “silver blocker” lightweight fabric between the two pieces of fabric to eliminate shadowing.

Vinyl banners come in various weights, most commonly for double-sided banners, the material weight is about 17oz. to 22 oz. and for single sided banners, 13 to 18 oz. Vinyl banners are typically cheaper, and in our opinion, are not as attractive as the poly fabric banners.

Banner Size

Sizing is not standard, as the width typically vary from 12 inches to 36 inches, but can go wider if required, although the wind load will increase exponentially the wider and taller the banner.

Banner Printing

Shadowing occurs when you have a double sided banner and the sun or bright light is behind it, making the darker portions of the print on the sunny side appear in the lighter areas of the shadow side. A simple 3 piece construction using a light-weight “silver blockout” fabric will alleviate shadowing with fabric banners.

Heavy vinyl banners – 17 or 18oz. or heavier – often have a blockout layer in between the two sides to prevent shadowing.

Hemming, Pole Pockets, and Grommet

A pole pocket is simpler to describe, and is favored by some for hanging banners, particularly indoors.

Grommets are more common out of doors where banners are hung between light poles or trees or pinned to the side of buildings with concrete anchor pins or the like. Indoors, banners tend to be smaller which favors pole pockets to a degree.

Grommets are typically metal or plastic, and are sometimes used on the pole edge of the banner to keep it from “walking” off the pole. However, if the banner is installed properly, grommets are not typically necessary.

When a banner is printed, it is hemmed with a fabric loop on the top and sometimes the bottom, and less frequently the sides (unless it is a retail display or a trade show display or backdrop). A pole can be inserted through this pocket, and some type of hanging apparatus connected to each end and hung from the ceiling.

Installation Considerations

Wind

Wind speed is the the first consideration. Regionally, the West Coast of the US is considered the lowest wind area, base on a 50 year high wind speed at 30 feet above ground, times 30% for wind gusts. So, if you want a 12’ x 18’ flag in Seattle, WA, it will need to be determined whether the flag pole you want to use can withstand an 85 mph wind x 1.3, or 111 mph winds.

Pole Banner Size

The size of the flag banner will also be reflected in the wind load rating. The larger the size, the more pull the wind will put on the pole. The sizes indicated above are the maximum size recommended for the stated pole sizes.

We don’t recommend “wind pockets” as they weaken the banners’ structure and reduce wind load by 5-10% maximum. A 24 inch by 60 inch banner should handle most areas’ wind speeds, and reinforced webbing can also give the banners additional strength.

Pole Thickness

The next is the wall thickness of the pole itself. As the height of pole goes up, the wall thickness will also increase. For instance, a 20’ pole, wind-rated for 120 mph while flying a 5’ x 8’ flag, will have an aluminum wall thickness of .188”; a 60’ pole will increase to a wall thickness of .25” to retain the same rating for the 120 mph wind with a 12’ x 18’ flag.

Concrete Base

The company you purchase your flag and flag pole from will give you the proper calculations (usually in cubic yards) for the amount of pre-mixed concrete you’ll need to use to make sure the pole you select will give you the right amount of ballast weight for wind speed required by your state, municipal or county regulations.

Durability and Longevity

Light Pole banners should last, on average, 2-3 years or longer. However, the sun, wind, and weather will affect longevity negatively, so professional installation is a must where wind and weather are concerned. Sunny climates will reduce the life expectancy of any pole banners, vinyl or polyester.

Rust proof method: Aluminum, fiberglass, or stainless steel hardware components should alleviate this concern.
