The Fabric for Teardrop Banners and Feather Flags

As mentioned at the introduction of this page, the fabric used for teardrop and feather flag banners is polyester. It is a polymer-based woven fabric material. It is the same type of material, with improvements, that your granddaddy used to wear suits made of. Like I said, though, improvements have been made to the materials so that now you can get anything from smooth poly knits to poly silks, poly flags, and sheer fabrics for almost any event, indoor or out.

Polyester is very stain resistant, and only certain specialty dyes are able to permanently color the fabric. They have also been made to mirror natural fibers. An example is “polysilk” fiber, obviously mimicking silk. Polyknits have been used for 50+ years, but now can emulate cotton or wool or taffeta or other natural or synthetic fibers, often with superior durability.

Some polyesters are “thermoplastics,” and these are the type used in polyester fabric. Natural fibers cannot be used in the print process due to their cellular structure and the chemistry of dye sublimation.

The pores of the polyolefin fabric expand and open. The dye from the transfer paper is converted to a gaseous state and the pressure from the rollers forces it into the open cells of the poly fabric, thus infusing the color to become part of the fabric itself.

As the fabric cools, the pores close back up around the dye, but are now whatever color the dye was that infused them. This process is somewhat like photo printing in that the tones are continuous, unlike the dot pattern of an inkjet printer. This also is what creates the richness of color, tone, and continuity in dye sublimation printed fabric graphics that catch everyone’s eyes.

The Substrates for X Banners

You can have either vinyl and polyester fabric banners as substrates for your X banners.

Vinyl banners are made using a loosely woven nylon fabric, which is encased in hot PVC vinyl. Once it cools, it is trimmed and rolled onto larger rolls, typically 50 yard or meter rolls, and shipped to distributors world wide. You’ll note that the vinyl banner material is not folded, but rolled, because vinyl banner material was not made to be folded.

They are great because they don’t cost much money to produce. They can be easily customized using advanced print technology and durable, custom or Pantone® colors, which are patented to be consistent and true from printer to printer. They are also easy to transport because they are lightweight and flexible.

The ink used is fade-resistant and maintains a bright, impressive appearance when displayed outside. The banners can be one-sided or two-sided. In a well-made banner, the grommets that will be used to hang it should be added to the hems. The side hems are doubled in thickness and can better hold a grommet than a single layer of vinyl.

Banner Care

Vinyl Banners

The more “plasticizers” that are used in the manufacturing process of a vinyl banner, the softer and more supple it will be. However, we always advise our clients to never fold their vinyl banners, because they will wrinkle, and the wrinkles may or may not be removable. Always roll your banners, and preferably on a hard cardboard or plastic tube core so that it won’t be crushed or folded.

Just roll it up or take it down, compressed into a very small package which is very easy to transport. Anyone can easily do the set up and take down when the event is over. All he or she need to do is place the rolled or folded banner into a shoulder bag and be on her way.

Fabric Banners

If you can’t fit the banner or banners in your washer, then you’ll need to manually wash them, whether when you’re hanging them or washing them in a large tub or barrel. It is likely you’ll need to use a more aggressive grease removing detergent with an outdoor banner that you would with its indoor banner counterpart.

After washing, the best practice is to hang them up to dry. If you don’t have this option, and they’ll fit in a dryer, go ahead and dry them that way. Make sure you don’t leave them in the dryer once it stops, as it’ll create wrinkly banners.

Once the fabric banner has dried, you can also use an iron on low heat to iron out any wrinkles that may have occurred in the drying process.

Banner Longevity and Durability

Vinyl banners can be truly long-lasting. They are sturdy, shiny and embossed to give a look of authority and brilliance. A matte-look is also available if too much shine is not what you are after. The color quality of digitally printed or screen-printed graphics is tough to beat.

They are a great choice for store openings, a large or dramatic sale, and other spectacular types of messages. Because these are made from synthetic plasticized vinyl materials, weather is no problem.

Consider using photographic quality printing if you want to create an extra-special look, carefully hemmed and hole-punched with grommets to add security to your banners’ longevity, as they are expected to last a good long time. In advertising terms, that translates to about five years with normal wear and tear if properly installed.

Most digitally printed banners, though, should, if properly installed, last at least 3 years outdoors, though I’ve seen them last 10 years in the case of one very cheap client. There is not much you can do to protect a banner from the sun, but a good quality ink should keep them lasting as long as you’ll need them to advertise your company or event.
