Does Clear Lamination on Outdoor Signs Make them Last Longer

Laminated decal

Is it possible to make a more durable and long lasting outdoor sign if you coat it with an overlaminate? Find out the answer below.

Question: I have a new sign and would like to put a protectant on it so it will last longer. What would you recommend for an outdoor sign?

This will somewhat depend on your outdoor signage, but in reality, most materials, printed, painted or constructed in the 21st century will last about the same amount of time with or without lamination or clear-coating.

Some sign gurus, though, might disagree with me in some instances,

How an Internally Illuminated Cabinet Pole Sign Is Constructed

Illuminated Pole Signage

In this blog post, I will share to you what I know when it comes to making and designing a 4′ x 8′ internally illuminated cabinet signage.

Question: Our church is requesting that some of us “handymen” construct a double-sided internally illuminated sign for the church.

Are you able to help us design and build a 4’ x 8’ sign like this?

That is a loaded question. First, if you are in the US, Canada, or most Western European countries, labels are required on your sign requiring it to be listed with a government agency that has approved you to produce an electrical sign.

Original Question: We are designing some banners for our business, and are discussing what colors to use on them. What input can you give us regarding contrast and overall banner color design.

Part 5 will specifically deal with parallel signs. We may have slightly over-answered the question, but all of what we’ve outlined here supports the color question. All of the topics relate back to the issue of your sign being seen, so color is important, and so is the size,

In this section, Part 4 of this series, we’ll start by looking at more precise calculations for determining the area needed for a sign or banner.

Personally, I am not a big fan of algebra, but sometimes the easiest way to calculate what the Area of a sign (Asign) is by using one,

Original Question: We are designing some banners for our business, and are discussing what colors to use on them. What input can you give us regarding contrast and overall banner color design.

As we have talked about in parts one and two in this article, just throwing a banner up on a wall or a sign on a pole could be some of the worst money you’ll ever waste if you don’t have a “scientific” method for determining the size of letters,

Making Business Signs

How to calculate the letter and graphic sizes for outdoor advertising Signs and Banners.

Original Question: We are designing some banners for our business, and are discussing what colors to use on them. What input can you give us regarding contrast and overall banner color design.

As stated in part one of this series, I am borrowing heavily from the USSC publication “Sign Legibility Rules of Thumb” in order to show you, dear reader, that you just can’t slap up a cheap, poorly designed sign and expect the world to beat a path to your business’ door.

Cone Vision

Doing effective sign advertising  – size of Letters and quantity of words in relation to traffic speed and number of Lanes.

Question: We are designing some banners for our business, and are discussing what colors to use on them. What input can you give us regarding contrast and overall banner color design.

This is an excellent question. Most people want to put the 23rd Psalm (so to speak) on a banner and expect that passersby by will be able to decipher it from their automobile. I’ve seen examples of this where someone used red letters on a black background,

Bootleg Signs – Sign Permits – Business Signs on the Interstate

For Sale Signs

Why companies use bootleg signs to avoid purchasing permits. Plus, who pays for the business signs on the interstate highways.

Question: Are weekend real estate directional signs allowed along State highways?

It will depend on the state you’re in, or how strict the enforcement of bootleg laws are.

Directional signs are used along the highway directing traffic to an event, sale, or home for sale, and are often called “bootleg” signs, because they’re typically considered illegal (the name comes from the Prohibition Era of the US’ history when “bootlegged” liquor was sold across the US by illegal producers.

What Signs are Legal and Time Needed to Procure a Permit

signs requiring permits

When sign permits are required, time needed to complete permit application, and possible illegal usage of flashing arrow sign.

Question: Can I put up a sign on my own property without a sign permit?

You may put up a sign on your property in some areas without a permit, but most major towns and cities consider signs a source of revenue, so they require permits.

They also require permits for signs based on zones in many municipalities. If you are in a commercial and industrial zone, there are usually fairly relaxed regulations on the size of sign you can put up,

Getting a Sign Permit and Right of Way Considerations

Property Signage

Displaying custom signs on streets, interstate highways, and applying for sign permits.

Question: Is it OK to put my sign on the highway Right-of-Way or State property?

No. Not in any state or 1st World country that I’m aware of can this be done. It is considered a potential hazard at worst and pollution at best.

Now, if you want to put a sign pretty much anywhere you want, move your business to a 3rd World Developing Nation such as the Dominican Republic or Honduras or Indonesia, where anything goes.

The interstate highways,
