Vinyl Decal and Sticker Printing

With digital full color printing, a small business that may not need 500, 5000, or 50,000 vinyl decal stickers can order quantities of 25, 50, or 100 at a reasonable cost. Now your small business can look like a big business, and nobody has to know you’re small, because you look big and well established with your vinyl decal stickers that were printed using full color printing.

The larger the sticker, the more sense to imprint these on a screen press. For instance, 4″ x 6″ vinyl graphic, quantity 500, single or double-sided, will be more cost effective to screen print with 4 CP, than to do them digitally. However, we’ve found that 2″ x 2″ one will make more sense, typically, to print digitally up to 1000 quantity.

They may be found in an extensive variety of dimensions, ranging from less than a square inch to Sixteen foot wide rolls just for vinyl decal printing for semi truck trailers or store windows or transit bus advertising campaigns.

There are actually a handful of techniques in producing them, but for a small-ish order, under six or seven square feet in size, and in a larger lot of, say, on average, 125 pieces or more, will generally be screen printed.

One that is bigger than 7 or 8 square feet, in particular smaller volumes, is presently effectively done with digital roll to roll ink jet printers. One which is very large dimensionally – in excess of 5 ft .. by 5 ft – is rarely made using the screen printing process because a small amount of manufacturers can actually create vinyl stickers this big on a screen printing press.

A large amount is digitally printed as very large polyvinyl graphics for transit buses, indoor or outdoor wall billboards, and semi truck trailers, not to mention store front glass windows. These kinds of oversized displays are invariably printed digitally, considering that wide format digital printers now are printing up to a whopping 16′ wide. I myself do not know of any company screen print business that does this size.

Vinyl Decal Material

Vinyl decals, also known as PVC or polyvinyl chloride decals, are a supple plastic material that is either hot cast or cold rolled (calendared). The cast vinyl is more dimensionally stable as the calendared material has “memory” of it’s original shape and size and will tend to shrink over time (don’t worry, it will never get all the way back!).

Because cast vinyl is poured hot, the production process is costlier, the material is actually thinner than calendared, and it usually carries a longer warranty. However, most decal printers use calendared films, except for vehicle wraps or other high end graphics that most often are printed on cast vinyl.

Decals made of polycarbonate material can be applied to almost any surface that receives a lot of wear and will protect the surface, keeping it safe from abrasion or scratches. Things like computer keyboards, appliances, office equipment, electronics, telephones, face plates, and various types of machinery can all be saved from excessive wear and tear on their surface.

Besides protecting surfaces these attractive and useful ones can literally save live and time by warning of dangers or cautioning about some form of changes ahead. Baby on Board vinyl decals stuck on vehicle back bumpers are yet another example of a warning that will, hopefully, cause others to take care and perhaps even slow down!

Some appear to have a domed appearance and look thicker than the usual vinyl decals. This is due to the thick coating of Polyurethane which provides a depth to the material while also protecting it from wear. Highly flexible, they are favored by electronic product manufacturers for use on many products and found as raised lettering or embossed logos and brand names.

Adhesive and Non-adhesive Types

ADHESIVE TYPES

1. Semi-Permanent Adhesive
If you’re looking for a decal that is going to go the distance, this excellent adhesive is superior in that it won’t permit your decal fall off of any item that you stick it on. The only caveat to that is if there is excessive continuous heat near these die cut stickers and decals, or if there is an issue of rust or other contaminants underneath the original surface they were applied to.

2. Easy-Peel Adhesive
Easy-peel adhesive graphics usually are, typically, as their name suggests, easy to remove. Regardless, in the event the adhesive is subjected to the elements for more than a year, the acrylic adhesive becomes solid and thus gets more and more difficult to take off, but as with the previous semi-permanent type, heat from a heat gun or hair dryer will help.

NON-ADHESIVE TYPES

1. Magnetic Vehicle Stickers
Magnetic products are fantastic for automobile product promotion that you need to take off your car daily. An good example of this would be virtually any pizza delivery driver or some contractors who need vehicle identification while on a job site, but nonetheless wouldn’t necessarily want to be identified weaving in and out of traffic during rush hour, especially if he or she is an aggressively competitive vehicle driver!

2. Static Window Clings
Static window cling vinyl is actually PVC flexible sheet product that includes extra plasticizers to make it especially pliable and sticky, but without any adhesive glue. This very popular product sticks great to glass and other super-smooth surfaces, and is also pulled back off quite easily (nonetheless, you’ll need to make sure your glass is definitely squeaky clean).

A large number of vehicle owners exclusively allow ONLY this kind to be place on their vehicle, and you will want to remember this fact when you’re trying to figure out what kind to order for your project.

Static Clings

Many retail stores refuse to put an adhesive advertising sticker on their storefront windows due to the potential difficulty of removal when they decide to take it off or replace it.

Another common material used is static cling material. It is made from a vinyl item that comes in clear and white, so the print processing is similar to the polyester graphics. One thing to note is that if the proper objects are used, different images can be used on both sides to produce a good quality. The main draw to using this type is that there is no adhesive involved at all. You just need to make sure the window gets thoroughly cleaned before applying it or it may fall off in a few days.

Window static cling decals are formulated from polyvinyl chloride. Most PVC sheeting is harder than the others, but adding extra liquid plasticizers to the PVC formulation creates a supple vinyl material with an exceptionally smooth finish. This end product is smooth, soft, and will stick to smooth, hard surfaces, particularly glass. It also is excellent for printing, hence double sided types are also available, though not digitally imprinted at this time.

The graphics can also be die-cut, and they are used for many different tasks, such as to advertise an event, as booster emblems for schools, colleges, and universities on the rear window of vehicles, as oil change or service stickers on the front windshield of vehicles, and even as window posters in retail outlets. One of our clients recently, a pharmaceutical company, ordered some that were double-sided and 36″ x 24″ – in reality a small display poster.

Double- Sided Decals, Stickers, or Clings

As a double sided sticker or decal will generally cost more than double what a single-sided costs, due to higher material costs – it takes three pieces to make them – versus one piece for a one-sided, because of the intermediary blockout layer. Why go to the extra expense? The reasons may surprise you!

Another reason that you, as the purchaser, is the advantage of an item that can be read from both inside and outside, similar to two-faced sign that is perpendicular to the street in front of the business. This kind simply gets more views than does a one-sided one.

The adhesive is made from polyester material with a blockout layer in between the printed sides. First, a clear polyester material is printed in reverse. Then, a layer of two-faced adhesive white “blockout” material is bonded to the clear material. Finally, the image is printed on the adhesive-less white side and you now have the end product. These can be imprinted spot or full color. Also, it is available with semi-permanent or removable adhesives.

Currently, there is no digital printing media that can produce a truly opaque double sided sticker. Screen printing is the only option that I am aware of unfortunately. If anyone hears of anyone who has discovered a digital printing material, please post a reply at the end of this article, ‘cuz I want to know about it!

Color Combination

1. Bright Yellow foreground on a Red background.
Experiments have been conducted as to the best color combinations for visibility, and the number one combination is bright yellow on red (think of a very large and famous hamburger franchise).

Different Color lettering on black background

2. Bright Yellow foreground on a Black background.
The second is bright yellow on black.

3. White foreground on a Red or Black background.
Third is white on red, the white on black.

So, to be seen, those would be the colors to look at first. Of course, white or yellow on a darker blue or green will also play well, so don’t pigeon-hole yourself too much if you have colors you use frequently with your business or organization logos.

Decal Care

Vinyl stickers, or decals, are typically made using what is known as PSV, or pressure-sensitive vinyl. If these are screen-printed or digitally printed, the inks should be water-proof. If not, you got some really cheap bad stuff.

Most reputable printers or firms that sell wall graphics will use good materials, though. At least good enough that you should be able to wash them using warm, soapy water. Don’t use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, or you will remove the ink from the PSV.

Storing

If you purchased them online or at a store recently, either leave them on a roll in a cool, dry location, or lay them out flat, if you have room to do so, also in a cool, dry location.

You should be able to store your wall graphics up to a year, maybe longer if they’re of very good quality material. However, over time, the adhesive may begin to “bite” into the release liner, making it increasingly difficult to remove. However, a few months in storage shouldn’t have any real affect on your vinyl wall decals.

Vinyl Decal and Sticker Durability

Vinyl stickers and decals  are 100% weatherproof, and if the ink is of good quality, then there really shouldn’t be any problem with water at any temperature, or snow either for that matter. Sun is probably the hardest on decals as it causes ink to fade.

Made of PVC cast or calendared vinyl sheeting, they should never wash off your car, and should last 2-3 years before the ink fades out completely. So if you’re ordering window decals for cars to promote your product or service, make sure you’re getting outdoor durable stickers.

Most vinyl decals and stickers will last 2-3 years out-of-doors. However, this is how the life of a vinyl sticker might be adversely affected:

Sun
Sun is probably the biggest offender that will reduce the life of a decal. It attacks not only the vinyl, but the print as well, causing it to fade. Cheaper vinyl decals will often pull away from whatever they are stuck to in direct sunlight.

Salt water
Salt water is also not too good for decals, unless they are laminated with a salt water resistant laminate, which are available. However, most of you won’t need to worry about this unless you live on the ocean where the wind sprays saltwater into area where you have decals.

Rain
Rain, Wind and Snow are typically not a threat to vinyl stickers. But chemicals can be. Certain laminates will protect decals from light chemicals like gasoline or paint thinner, but few can resist lacquer thinner or MEK.
